“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” Psalm 46:5
I have to admit, I’m one of those “one little word” junkies. Every year there is a word that comes to mind as a theme for how things might work out or what I should focus on. This word usually comes after spending some time in prayer about it and asking the Lord to lead me. So when the word “shift” kept popping up right before January of this new year, I was surprised. Here’s why.
Shift isn’t a big change. Actually the word “shift” means to move or cause to move from one place to another over a small distance. A subtle movement. A slight change in position, direction or even tendency.
It wasn’t until the beginning of March when I really started asking God for more information. It sounded good to say “Yeah, I want to shift!” but to what? For what? How far? Why would God give me a word that means a tiny change and not something big or extravagant? Isn’t “more” what we as believers should strive for? And one day during devotion, these words started flowing and I knew He had answered my prayer.
You don’t have to shift your position to shift your attention.
God has given me the right foundation. This I know because of the amazing Bible teaching from my pastor, the church ministry and personal devotion. There is no doubt that I know the truth about who God is. The key is to stay in it while shifting my focus on Jesus first in order to be properly aligned with what He has asked me to do.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.” Psalm 121:1-3
Sometimes God asks for our attention to shift, not our entire person. Sometimes we do have a great foundation, we just need to reconnect properly to the Creator of it! My prayer has become:
“Shift my focus, Lord. Shift my eyes. Shift my heart. Shift my mind. Let my entire being be in line with You and Your will by placing You in the center of everything.”
Most people move out of position and off the foundation because their gaze was off God. When we are looking away from Jesus, everything else within us looks away too. The Lord has been showing me that the longer my gaze stays off of Him, the more in danger I am in moving completely off the entire foundation.
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. ” Colossians 3:2
I can stand firm in my faith. I can be an unmovable force, as long as I shift my attention to the One who holds all power! I will dig my heels into His Word. I will plow deeper into His truth. I will shift my gaze, my eyes, my mind, my heart to be in line with His gaze, His eyes, His mind, His heart.
Not everything has to be a huge change so God can use you. Especially if you’re foundation is correct but you just need a tiny tweak. A new perspective. A shift in your attention. So while I was prepared to allow the Lord to do a big spiritual overhaul, He has been teaching me that sometimes the biggest changes come from the smallest moments of obedience. Little habits I can incorporate each day that will bring me closer to His side.
